Michigan State had an absolutely crazy offseason, but regardless less of the horrific actions of Larry Nassar, the Spartans will still suit up for the 2018 season. They will also return some of the most experienced, lethal teams in the nation. The team that went 3-9 two years ago is back with a vengeance and ready to take the B1G East crown after going 10-3 last year and ending the year ranked 19th.
Recruits
Despite its bad press, Michigan State brought in the 32nd best class in the nation and the 6th best class in the B1G. The class is led by Cornerback Kalon Gervin and a pair of 4 star recruits out of Pickerington, OH, TE Trenton Gillison and Xavier Henderson.
Quarterbacks
Brian Lewerke returns as starting quarterback. After playing in only 4 games in the 2016 season, Lewerke led the team’s comeback to the national stage and played in all 13 games, completing59% of his 417 passes for 2793 yards, 20 TDs and only 7 interceptions. Michigan State had the nations 76th best passing attack that had the 3rd best time of possession.
Offense
The best thing Michigan State has is experience. The Spartans return its top 4 receivers who accounted for 1,991 of 2798 yards and 15 of 20 passing TDs. The Spartans also return LJ Scott who had 898 yards and 8 TDs on the ground. Lewerke can run the ball as well, rushing for 559 yards and 5 scores last season. The line also returns 5 starting linemen for an offense that can continue to roll and improve on its numbers from last year.
Defense
Michigan State returns 9 of its starting 11 defensive players that ranked 7th in the nation in Total Defense and 2nd in Rushing defense. There is no other team in the nation that has this sort of continuity. Barring any injuries, this defense will be primed to take Michigan State to the B1G championship, especially with its favorable schedule.

Like its older brother, Michigan State doesn’t face a ranked opponent until October. The Spartans however have the benefit of not scheduling Wisconsin. If the Spartans can beat its B1G East opponents and win the B1G, a playoff berth will be waiting for them.
